I have one of the best behaved dogs I have ever met and I owe much of that to this book. My brother suggested this book when I bought my labradoodle 3 years ago. I read it cover to cover the day I brought her home and tried to follow it as closely as I could. I had a little trouble getting myself to “growl” at her as I was living in a busy apartment complex at the time but I used a stern “bad dog” which worked for me. One of the best things I learned from this book was how to acclimate my new pup to her crate which was key! Before long, she knew that when I brushed my teeth in the morning it was time for her to go to her crate. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about getting a dog. It has so much great information!!! I’m so thankful I read it because I truly do have a great dog!

Although I have raised seven dogs over the past thirty years, this book had great lessons and reminders. After reading the book, I realize why some of our past pets had problems as adult dogs. The tips show how to develop a dog that will become a great addition to the family!

I grew up with dogs, and bought this book because I had never raised a puppy on my own before. The book made a couple good points, but overall was a waste of money. Maybe this book would be better for someone with absolutely no dog experience. I’d say that if things in the book conflict with your instincts, go with your instincts. Certainly don’t take this book to be doggie gospel.

I was excited when I got this book but after reading many books on dog trainning and behavior I found this book to be not so helpful or to the point. I was having many problems teaching my dog how to walk on a leash and stop mouthing everyone in the family and this book barley addressed these issues and didn’t say how to handle them at all. all it did was explain what mouthing was and why puppies do it. Yeah well that didn’t help me. Save your money for a shorter book that will work!

Teaching your puppy to live with you before he’s four months old is a good idea; this book is not. This book hypes training for puppies under four months, but in reality, all good puppy books list the same ideas–toys, socialization, etc.–and in as much detail. Many trainers would not recommend the methods used in this book (i.e., growling instead of “no,” wrestling to gain alpha status) for training your puppy. Once your cute puppy grows into a 95 lb. adult, growling at him in a disciplinary situation may result in a trip to the emergency room. This “method”, coupled with the chapter listing the “worst breeds” and the consequences of owning one (e.g., GSDs will eat your small dog, or your Springer Spaniel will turn on you someday), really turned me off to this book. I recommend investing in a book about puppy socialization (same idea, less politics). This text is salavageable only in that the housebreaking section was accurate, minus the growls.
