Hybrid Dogs, Mixed Breed Dogs and Purebreds
There have long been mixed breed dogs that contrast quite a bit in looks, size and personality. They are often referred to as “mutts” and they tend to have durable health and they make terrific pets. You can usually locate a great mutt to adopt from the local shelter.
A mixed breed dog is not a purebred and it may not be known if the parents of the dog are purebreds. They are basically dogs from an unspecified origin and a uncertain heritable line. They are frequently clever and wonderful and they make great pets but their pedigree is unknown.
A purebred has two parents of the same breed. Usually there are lengthy genetic records that go back many generations. Breeders painstakingly select the dogs they will breed so as to assure that the strongest qualities are representative in the pups.
You may prefer a purebred for a pet or you may favor a mutt. A mutt will usually have strong health and they do make great pets but a purebred has individual qualities that are bred in. There also is another selection that you may consider and that is the hybrid dog or the “designer dog”.
Hybrids are a cross of two purebred dogs from two distinct breeds. They are diverse from a mutt because their pedigree is known. Each of their parents are purebreds with hereditary lines that can generally be traced back many generations.
These days’ hybrid dogs are becoming quite popular. They can be found in dog shows, pet stores and even the movies. The hybrids usually have the best characteristics of each breed and they mingle the best attributes from both breeds.
These hybrid dogs frequently have very amusing names such as a cockapoo for a cocker and poodle combination, a puggle, which is a pug and beagle combination, a goldendoodle, which is a golden retriever and poodle combination and of course, many other fun mixtures of the two purebred names.
Hybrids are wonderful pets and if you are having a difficult time deciding on a breed a hybrid can get you the best of two breeds. They mostly have impressive health and they are intelligent and fun dogs to own.

Thank you very much for your excellent article.
So many purebred fanciers tend to look down on crossbreds, and ignore the fact that all the scientific research shows them to be a very healthy and robust choice for a pet.
I have a Labradoodle and a Cockapoo, and they are beautiful, happy and friendly dogs, who have never had a single health problem.
